Retreat (2011)Directed by: Carl Tibbetts Written by: Carl Tibbetts, Janice HallettStarring: Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, Jamie Bell
What seems almost like a play, Retreat is a total nightmare for anyone claustrophobic. An in-depth character study of three people, all carrying around their own baggage, pretty much locked in house. As thrilling as it is mysterious, the twist might pack a punch if you’re not expecting it. On top of a tight story and short but sweet script, the performances are well-honed and you get to see Murphy, Bell, and Newton take on some great dramatic roles. Jamie Bell shines here as the character that we as the audience are reluctant to warm to, but plays the complexities quite well. It will be over before you know it, and the ending will leave you a little spellbound, but it’s a great Hitchcockian thriller that deserves a lot more notice.
My rating: 4/5
